چکیده

We present a (randomized) test for monotonicity of Boolean functions. Namely, given the ability to query an unknown function at arguments of its choice, the test always accepts a monotone , and rejects with high probability if it is -far from being monotone (i.e., every monotone function differs from on more than an fraction of the domain). The complexity of the test is ! #" %$ . The analysis of our algorithm relates two natural combinatorial quantities that can be measured with respect to a Boolean function; one being global to the function and the other being local to it. We also consider the problem of testing monotonicity based only on random examples labeled by the function. We show an &' %( ) " %$ lower bound on the number of required examples, and provide a matching upper bound (via an algorithm). * Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, ISRAEL. Adaptive Lower Bound for Testing Monotonicity on the Line

In the property testing model, the task is to distinguish objects possessing some property from the objects that are far from it. One of such properties is monotonicity, when the objects are functions from one poset to another. It is an active area of research. Recently, Pallavoor, Raskhodnikova and Varma (ITCS’17) proposed an ε-tester for monotonicity of a function f : [n] → [r], whose complex...

2 TESTING MONOTONICITY : O ( n ) UPPER BOUND

1 Overview 1.1 Last time • Proper learning for P implies property testing of P (generic, but quite inefficient) • Testing linearity (over GF[2]), i.e. P = {all parities}: (optimal) O 1-query 1-sided non-adaptive tester. • Testing monotonicity (P = {all monotone functions}: an efficient O n-query 1-sided non-adaptive tester.

Optimal bounds for monotonicity and Lipschitz testing over the hypercube

The problem of monotonicity testing of the boolean hypercube is a classic well-studied, yet unsolved question in property testing. We are given query access to f : {0, 1} 7→ R (for some ordered range R). The boolean hypercube B has a natural partial order, denoted by ≺ (defined by the product of coordinate-wise ordering). A function is monotone if all pairs x ≺ y in B, f(x) ≤ f(y). The distance...

Stochastic Monotonicity in Intergenerational Mobility Tables

The aim of this paper is to test for stochastic monotonicity in intergenerational socio-economic mobility tables. In other words we question whether having a parent from a high socio-economic status is never worse than having one with a lower status. Using existing inferential procedures for testing unconditional stochastic monotonicity, we first test a set of 149 intergenerational mobility tab...

Testing monotonicity of distributions over general partial orders

We investigate the number of samples required for testing the monotonicity of a distribution with respect to an arbitrary underlying partially ordered set. Our first result is a nearly linear lower bound for the sample complexity of testing monotonicity with respect to the poset consisting of a directed perfect matching. This is the first nearly linear lower bound known for a natural non-symmet...

Big Data on the Rise? - Testing Monotonicity of Distributions

The field of property testing of probability distributions, or distribution testing, aims to provide fast and (most likely) correct answers to questions pertaining to specific aspects of very large datasets. In this work, we consider a property of particular interest, monotonicity of distributions. We focus on the complexity of monotonicity testing across different models of access to the distr...
